Flexibility and Style Rule the Day Today’s office tenants are looking beyond trendy climbing walls and foosball tables to comfy furniture, sit-stand workstations and vibrant colors to help attract top talent. The goal is to make the office environment inviting, adaptable and efficient. “Employers realize that the office environment has to be just right in order to attract top talent,” said Alesia Atwood, corporate account manager with SEAATS, which is a division of Earles Architects and Associates. “The layout of the office, the flow of work space, and the furniture arrangements all fit together to create an appealing work environment. The goal is to help nurture employee relationships, improve productivity, and develop a strong collaborative culture.” Among the Top 5 Office Design Trends to watch are: 

  1. Flexible furniture that feels like home—Employers are bringing in desks, seating, benches and ottomans that mimic those found in a home. Also look for break rooms with islands and family style seating, and plants, textured wall coverings, and art.
  2. Furniture that rejuvenates—Today’s office workers are busy and want furniture that can support them through long days. Many desks and chairs are made with ergonomics in mind and offer comfortable seats and flexibility for height and positioning. They also are sold in varying sizes to allow for customization of individual work stations.
  3. Making the most of small spaces—Several manufacturers are modifying their furniture lines to help companies work more efficiently in small spaces. There are now a wide variety of sizes and shapes in desks, chairs, benches and tables, all designed to fill even the most unusual spaces. This allows businesses to use space efficiently, maximize vertical space, and avoid wasted or “dead” space.
  4. Open but private rules the day – Collaborative, open space is great, but employees also need to hold meetings and talk privately with clients. One solution is in an office design with nooks separated by decorative panels or partial walls.
  5. Technology is everywhere – Being wired is critical in today’s business world and furniture manufacturers have taken note. Offices can be designed with furniture that has built-in charging stations, for example. The space also should be designed to maximize connectivity and allow for private stations where workers can go and recharge their laptops, make client calls and connect with clients. For companies with a mobile workforce, wifi hot spots and “hot desking,” where employees rotate through unassigned desks, are ideal options.
